Ports and harbours have obligations under the Merchant Shipping (Port Waste Reception Facilities) Regulations to provide adequate waste reception facilities for visiting vessels. MacWaste supports port and harbour operators in meeting these obligations across Northern Ireland.

Hazardous Waste Classification
Vessel-generated waste — bilge water, oily waste, sewage sludge and garbage — is classified as controlled or hazardous waste under MARPOL and domestic marine pollution regulations, and ports must provide licensed reception facilities for it.
Port Waste Reception Plans
Ports and harbours are required to have Port Waste Management Plans and to provide reception facilities for vessel-generated waste. MacWaste can support port operators in developing and implementing compliant waste reception arrangements.
Waste Streams We Collect

Collection to Suit You
We work with port and harbour operators to provide reception arrangements that scale with vessel traffic — from occasional callers to busy commercial ports — in compliance with MARPOL requirements and domestic marine pollution regulations.

Licensed & Documented
MacWaste is fully licensed for the waste streams generated by marine operations. We provide all the documentation required by vessels maintaining MARPOL records and by port authorities demonstrating regulatory compliance.
