Confined space work typically means limited access and egress points and poor ventilation, which makes these environments a serious health and safety risk. MacWaste operatives are certified for confined space entry, enabling us to undertake cleaning, waste removal and gas testing work in tanks, vessels, sewers, manholes and other restricted access environments across the UK and Ireland.

Certified Confined Space Operatives
All MacWaste operatives undertaking confined space work hold current confined space entry certification. We carry all the equipment required for safe working — gas detectors, breathing apparatus, ventilation systems, communication devices and rescue equipment — and our crews receive extensive training in emergency response and rescue procedures.
Environments We Work In
- Tanks, vessels and silos
- Sewers and manholes
- Pits, sumps and culverts
- Underground vaults
- Tunnels
- Other below-ground or enclosed industrial environments
How We Manage a Confined Space Job
Site Visit & Risk Assessment
No confined space project is undertaken until a site visit has been conducted and a specific Risk Assessment and Method Statement has been agreed.
Atmosphere Testing & Permit
We test the atmosphere to determine whether breathing apparatus is required. The most hazardous spaces are worked under a formal permit to enter.
Certified Entry & Monitoring
Certified operatives enter with full PPE and rescue equipment on site, continuously monitored throughout to ensure a safe working environment.
Key Confined Space Hazards
The main hazards on a confined space project can include poor air quality and lack of oxygen, the presence of toxic gases, flammable or explosive atmospheres, engulfment by liquids or free-flowing solids, physical hazards such as sharp objects or narrow pinch points, and high temperatures leading to heat stress. We identify and manage every hazard, atmospheric, physical and procedural, before any operative enters the space.
ISO 45001 Certified
Our confined space work is carried out under our ISO 45001 accredited health and safety management system, with full risk assessments and method statements on file for every job.
Fully Equipped Crews
Gas detectors, breathing apparatus, ventilation, communications and rescue equipment are on site for every confined space entry, whatever the job or its duration.
